Inter-Apartmental-Threesome
What is privacy if someone else can hear you? Does a private act become public when someone else chooses to engage? Sometimes we cannot ignore a sound that infiltrates our space, our senses betray us. We cannot unhear something, cannot unsee something.
In my home I consistently bear witness to my neighbor Robert’s sexual schedule. His schedule became so consistent that I started to keep a log. His love making style so recognizable I could not ignore it anymore. With the audible evidence of this intimate act penetrating my private space, at what point does this sound belong to me? By playing with the constructed ideas of public and private space I am able to create a multi-layered performance that blends these two “spaces” into one.
I gave myself a performance score, “I must masturbate every time I hear my neighbor having sex.” Through these constraints I developed the term, “inter-apartmental-threesome”.
As you listen to my neighbor begin to pound away, drawing my attention to his intimacy, I participate with him (and his lover who I can never hear) in my own private act. The three of us create a public experience for one another and for whoever may be within ear shot.
